FLIGHT TO KING ISLAND

 

Discover King Island on our four day adventure and explore an island rich in history with shipwrecks, lighthouses and jagged reefs, bountiful with long stretching sandy beaches and lush green pastures. We travel to Essendon Airport to board our flight to King Island. On arrival we’ll receive a friendly King Island welcome by our tour guide and taken to Boomerang by the Sea, our accommodation where we will stay while on this idyllic island. We will admire watching the sunset across the water whilst we enjoy dinner at the hotel.

FARM TOUR - CURRIE - MUSEUM

 

King Island produce is sought after around the world by so many top restaurants. This morning we will visit a local farm to learn about some of the island’s agriculture. In the afternoon, we’ll explore the island’s main township of Currie and visit King Island’s Historical Society Museum which is housed in the old lighthouse keeper’s residence. We’ll discover the island’s history where there is an emphasis on material from shipwrecks. From the museum we can see the nearby Currie Lighthouse, a wrought iron structure which was prefabricated in England and sent to King Island in 312 pieces to be assembled in 1879.

CALCIFIED FOREST - NARACOOPA - GRASSY - PENGUINS

 

Today we visit Seal Rocks State Reserve at the southern tip of the island, home to a calcified forest. We follow the walking track to the viewing platform overlooking the 7,000 year old remains of an ancient forest revealed when the lime laden sand, which had covered and preserved its stumps, trunks and branches, was blown away. Next stop is Grassy, once a thriving mining town but since the closure of the town’s mine, Grassy has reinvented itself as a vibrant village with a the small community of locals expanding to include creative’s and holiday makers. Grassy is a popular deep water fishing harbour and home to the island’s main port. We then travel to the east coast, past the City of Melbourne Bay to Naracoopa and admire the white sandy beaches of Sea Elephant Bay. After dinner we venture out to view the fairy penguins at dusk as they parade to their nests. Look out for the local wildlife on our return to Currie.

PENNY’S LAGOON - CAPE WICKHAM - KING ISLAND CHEESE - HOME

 

As we travel north today, watch out for wild turkeys crossing the road, peacocks, geese and ring-necked pheasants feeding in roadside paddocks. We view the Yellow Rock River and the panoramas of Christmas and New Year Islands from Yellow Rock Beach. We’ll visit Penny’s Lagoon, a suspended lake (one of only three in the world). We then visit beautiful Martha Lavinia Beach where the miles of pale sand and is a drawcard for surfers, fishermen and shell collectors. Standing proudly at the northern most tip of the Island is Cape Wickham Lighthouse. Built in 1861 using local granite, it is the tallest lighthouse in the Southern hemisphere. We can reflect on the heartbreak of shipwrecks as we view the grave stones of the crews of the “Neva” and “Loch Leven” and gaze out across Bass Strait at the distant wreck sites. Returning south we visit the world renowned King Island Dairy for an opportunity to taste the speciality cheese in the Fromagerie, and purchase from the range of delicious prize winning dairy products. This afternoon we fly back to the mainland with fond memories of this quiet, peaceful paradise. We are met at Essendon airport by our chauffeurs who will return us safely home.

Mid afternoon we travel to Station Pier Port Melbourne to board the ‘Spirit of Tasmania’ for the overnight cruise to Devonport. We will have dinner on board before having time to explore the many interesting features of this exciting vessel including the bars, cinemas and entertainment areas. Settle into your own ensuite twin berth porthole cabin.

LAUNCESTON - NORTH EAST - ST. HELENS

 

On arrival at Devonport Terminal, we disembark and are escorted to our coach. After enjoying breakfast, we tour through the picturesque countryside to the northern city of Launceston where highlights include the city centre and beautiful Cataract Gorge. Stroll the peacock gardens, cross the suspension foot-bridge or take an optional (own expense) chairlift ride across one of the longest single-span chairlifts in the world. We continue on to gain views of the picturesque Tamar Valley, before touring the North East to the rich agricultural region of Scottsdale and former tin mining centre of Derby. We will view the tree carvings at Legerwood and cross Weldborough Pass through the myrtle rainforest before descending to the East Coast at St. Helens, with its white sands and fishing fleet. We have time to settle into our accommodation and enjoy a stroll or just relax on the deck overlooking beautiful Georges Bay.

TASMANIAN DEVILS - TASMAN SEA - FREYCINET PENINSULA - HOBART

 

Today we head south beside the blue waters of the Tasman Sea, through fishing and holiday villages of Scamander and Bicheno. We visit East Coast Natureworld to learn about the threat to the Tasmanian Devil, before viewing the ‘Gulch’ fishing harbour and the ocean blowhole. We then continue to picturesque Coles Bay and Freycinet National Park with its jagged pink granite peaks, crystal clear waters and white sandy beaches. After lunch we’ll enjoy magnificent coastal views during the easy walk at Cape Tourville to the Lighthouse. Early afternoon we rejoin the Tasman Highway, passing through Swansea and pausing at the convict built, enigmatic Spiky Bridge. We follow the Prosser River Valley through Buckland and Cambridge and cross the picturesque Derwent River into the city of Hobart nestling at the foot of majestic Mt. Wellington.  Our accommodation for the next 4 nights is at the centrally located Old Woolstore.

GRANDVEWE SHEEP DAIRY -CRAWLEIGHWOOD GARDEN - WREST POINT

 

This morning we travel south beside the picturesque Derwent River. We visit Grandvewe for an informative tour and tasting at this ewenique sheep dairy. We then travel to nearby Crawleighwood Garden, a wonderful 2 hectare garden nestled in the scenic hills of Cygnet. The garden features lush woodland and rainforest with a eclectic variety of plants. After lunch at Home Hill Winery Restaurant, we return to Hobart along the Huon Highway. Our dinner tonight is a buffet at Australia’s oldest Casino, Wrest Point. There will be time for a flutter before viewing the city lights on return to our accommodation.

SALAMANCA MARKETS - RICHMOND - BOTANICAL GARDENS

 

A relaxed day of touring around the city of Hobart includes historic Battery Point, Salamanca Place, Constitution Docks and the waterfront. As it is Saturday morning, we take the opportunity to explore the famous Salamanca open-air Market with its bustle and buskers, colour and excitement. We cross the Derwent River to the historic village of Richmond. You may like to walk across Australia’s oldest bridge, built by convict labour between 1823 and 1825. Visit the cemetery of Australia’s oldest remaining Catholic Church, St John the Evangelist, built in 1836, or browse through the many delightful craft shops, galleries and food stores. Pause to enjoy some quiet moments in Hobart’s Royal Botanical Gardens before returning to our accommodation. The remainder of the afternoon is yours to relax or explore as you wish.

We travel via Sorell Causeway and Midway Point for our full day tour to the Tasman Peninsula, taking in magnificent views from the look-out above picturesque Eaglehawk Neck and Pirates Bay before continuing to the Port Arthur Convict Settlement. Within the 40 hectares of landscaped grounds lies a rich history of Australia’s convict past. Included in the entry is a guided walking tour, a short Harbour Cruise, access to the Visitor Centre and Interpretation Gallery as well as more than 30 buildings, ruins and restored gardens and houses. Explore as you wish before departing the Historic Site to tour beside Norfolk and Frederick Henry Bays back to Hobart.

DERWENT VALLEY - NEW NORFOLK - 'THE WALL' - QUEENSTOWN

 

We farewell Hobart to follow the Derwent Valley through hop fields and hills to historic New Norfolk. We climb the Central Plateau through highland trout-lakes country to Tarraleah Gorge, site of an early Hydro-electric Power Station. We visit ‘The Wall in The Wilderness’ - an extraordinary work of art being crafted, telling the story of Tasmania’s Central Highlands and experience the wonders of Gondwanaland during a short rainforest walk in the Wild Rivers National Park to Nelson Falls. We observe the altered landscape of bare, colourful hills as we cross Lake Burbury and descend through the ghost towns of the Chamouni Valley to the copper mining town of Queenstown. We then continue through to the harbour-side village of Strahan; a beautiful waterfront holiday village, where we will spend the next two nights.

MACQUARIE HARBOUR - GORDON RIVER CRUISE - STRAHAN

 

We cruise the incomparable Gordon River this morning in the heart of the Tasmania’s Wilderness World Heritage Area. Cross vast Macquarie Harbour, past Sarah Island, the worst convict settlement of all - and follow the Gordon through stands of ancient Huon pine, sassafras and myrtle rainforest to step ashore for a wilderness board-walk at Heritage Landing. We voyage to Hell's Gates, the aptly named harbour entrance where many early ships were destroyed by ferocious ocean swells. On return to Strahan, there will be opportunity to explore the Village, including the Visitor Centre and Huon Pine Sawmill before returning to our accommodation for a well earned rest.

CRADLE MOUNTAIN - DOVE LAKE - SMITHTON

 

This morning we tour through the historic mining town of Zeehan. The town was established in the late 1800’s after tin, silver and lead discoveries sparked the largest mining boom in the west. Nicknamed the ‘Silver City’, it quickly grew into Tasmania’s third largest town. We continue north through rainforest and mineral rich mountains, crossing the Vale of Belvior and alpine cattle country to reach Cradle Mountain National Park. We board the shuttle bus to Dove Lake at the foot of the crags of Cradle Mountain and visit Waldheim, forest home of pioneer Gustav Weindorfer. We enjoy lunch at Cradle Mountain Hotel and have the opportunity to visit the Wilderness Gallery before following the Highway through mountains and button grass plains to the North West Coast and our overnight accommodation in Smithton.

STANLEY - BURNIE - SHEFFIELD MURALS - SPIRIT OF TASMANIA

 

This morning we visit the historical village of Stanley, nestling at the foot of an ancient volcanic core known as “The Nut”. Treat yourself to a chairlift ride to the top for great views of the town and northern coastline (own expense). Marvel at the breathtaking views from the rich agricultural Table Cape with it’s amazing diversity of crops and farms. We tour the industrial city of Burnie and enjoy some free time. We then follow the Bass Highway and scenic coastal route through Penguin and Ulverstone to Devonport and venture into the hinterland to the murals town of Sheffield. Here the local community has recorded the history of the area in life-size paintings on the town walls. On our return to Devonport we detour to visit the delicious The House of Anvers to sample a real chocolate taste sensation at the Belgian Chocolate Factory.  We then board the Spirit of Tasmania where we will enjoy an evening meal on board while cruising across Bass Strait.

Early risers may witness the entry through the Heads into Port Phillip Bay and watch the Melbourne City skyline come into view. WHITEMARK - VINEGAR HILL LOOKOUT - LADY BARRON

 

Welcome to our 5 day tour to Flinders Island. With pickup from our homes we transfer to Essendon Airport to depart for our scenic flight to Flinders Island. On our arrival to Whitemark Airport, we will be welcomed aboard the coach and transferred to our accommodation for the next four nights at the Furneaux Tavern in Lady Barron. Along the way keep an eye out for Cape Barren Geese at home in their natural habitat of hillside and heath land as we travel to Vinegar Hill Lookout for spectacular views out across Franklin Sound and its islands set against the backdrop of the hills of Cape Barren Island.

 

OVERNIGHT: Furneaux Tavern, LADY BARRON

CASTLE ROCK - KILLECRANKIE BAY - WYBALENNA

 

Today we explore the north western corner of the island, pausing at the photogenic Castle Rock. We enjoy morning tea at the far northern area of Palana, a site of coastal surveillance at the start of World War II before touring to nearby North East River which is a favourite spot for local fishermen. We have time to stroll along beautiful Killiecrankie Bay keeping an eye out for the famous Killiecrankie diamonds. Our lunch stop is at Deep Bite Café which has magnificent views of Mt Killiecrankie. This afternoon we explore the history of Wybalenna, a small settlement established in 1833 – 1847 to house Tasmanian Aboriginal people brought to Flinders Island by George Robinson. Today, the only remaining building is the red brick chapel which has been restored by the National Trust and is of national heritage significance. Near Emita, we visit the small but interesting Furneaux Museum which contains a wonderful collection of records and exhibits of the island’s natural history, maritime heritage and island lifestyle, including mementos of stirring days and enterprises. We stroll along Allports Beach and enjoy afternoon tea before returning to our accommodation.

BOAT CRUISE - PATRIARCHS WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

 

After breakfast we board our cruise vessel departing from the wharf at Lady Barron for a morning cruise of picturesque Franklin Sound with its various islands including Little Dog, Great Dog and Vansittart. We explore remote beaches; observe the wildlife and the wonderful sight of soaring sea birds, Albatross, Pacific Gulls, Shearwaters and Sea Eagles. We return for a late lunch at the Tavern and some free time before either going out on an evening Sunset Mutton Bird Cruise, or meeting the Parks & Wildlife officer at Patriarch Sanctuary, a wildlife haven where we will encounter some of the native animals.

TROUSERS POINT - MT STREZLECKI - WHITEMARK

 

This morning, we follow the Coast Road to Fotheringate Bay where we will have a chance to explore the beaches and have morning tea. We stop at the beautiful Trousers Point with Mt. Strzelecki’s towering granite crags forming a backdrop to the pristine half-moon beach. Have your cameras ready for this famous, photogenic area. We travel to the main town of Whitemark to have a look around the town, with time to visit the galleries and gem shop before having lunch at The Interstate Hotel. This afternoon, we take in the 360 degree view of Flinders and the surrounding islands from Walkers Hill Lookout. We pause at Tobias Furneaux Lookout for wonderful views across the farmlands then continue to the wetland breeding area of Cameron Inlet before returning to our accommodation.

FAREWELL FLINDERS ISLAND

 

For our last morning on Flinders Island we will have some time for exploring and morning tea before we are transferred to Whitemark Airport for our flight back to Melbourne. As always, our chauffeurs will be there to greet us and return us safely to our homes with memories of a fascinating and rewarding tour of Flinders Island.

  • No passenger will be permitted to embark on or continue the tour while their physical or mental condition is, in the opinion of any representative of O’Shannessy’s Quality Tours, such as to render them incapable of caring for themselves, or whereby they become objectionable to other passengers, or they become a hazard to themselves or other passengers. Whilst on tour with O’Shannessy’s Quality Tours should a passenger require medical attention, discharge papers must be provided to a representative of O’Shannessy’s Quality Tours before you are able to re-join the tour.
  • O’Shannessy’s Quality Tours will not be responsible for expenses resulting in such persons being precluded from completing the tour for any such reason. No refunds or transfers will be given on any unused portions of the itinerary.
  • It is a requirement of O’Shannessy’s Quality Tours that each passenger is able to negotiate coach steps without the aid of the coach crew or other passengers.
  • Any passenger who requires assistance for any of the above is required to travel with a companion capable of providing all necessary assistance.
  • Passengers who are smokers, have a CPAP machine or snore, unless travelling with a companion, will be required to pay the single supplement premium for the sole use of a room.
  • Items of a personal nature such as medical expenses, mini bar, beverages, laundry service, room service, internet usage, telephone calls, and any optional extras are not included in your tour price.
  • All passengers are required to co-operate with the seat rotation program determined by O’Shannessy’s Quality Tours tour directors.
  • O’Shannessy’s Quality Tours reserves the right to vary any accommodation, price or other features of the tour at any time at their own discretion.
