Itinerary

HOME TO FOSTER

Welcome aboard our exciting and flavour filled New Year Gippsland Gourmet Trail adventure! Our chauffeurs whisk us away this morning to meet our O’Shannessy’s Quality Tours crew and luxury touring coach. Stepping on board, away we go, skirting the shores of Western Port Bay to Korumburra and the Coal Creek Community Park and Museum where we spend some time immersed in this re-created early 19th century rural community. Our guide will take us on a tour telling the story through the eyes of James Hardwick, the Coal Creek Propriety Mine Manager of early settlement in Korumburra. From here we continue on to Koonwarra for lunch at the Koonwarra Store before continuing on to Foster, our base for the next 4 nights.

OVERNIGHT:  Prom Country Lodge, FOSTER

WILSONS PROMONTORY NATIONAL PARK

We leave mid-morning and head to Victoria’s largest coastal wilderness area in Wilsons Promontory National Park. We arrive at the Loo Errn track which follows the south bank of Tidal River and takes us to the Tidal River footbridge where a short boardwalk protects the fragile wetlands. The easy 30 minute walk is designed for people with limited mobility. However if you are after a little more of a challenge, there is the Squeaky Beach track that begins from the footbridge and takes
in spectacular coastal views as it climbs up and over the headland that separates Norman and Leonard Bays and descends to Squeaky Beach.
If you don’t feel like doing the 2.5km walk then we have the perfect spot to enjoy our picnic lunches while we wait for the rest of the group to return. Heading back to Foster we pass through Fish Creek which has a number of art and craft outlets - well worth the time to take a look!

OVERNIGHT:  Prom Country Lodge, FOSTER

EAST GIPPSLAND

The historic Port of Sale first opened to shipping in 1890 as the westernmost port in the Gippsland Lakes.  We’ll meet up with a local expert of this interesting area for a Port of Sale Tour, followed by lunch at The Criterion Hotel where their philosophy is simple: Support the locals.

“We source as much locally as we can. Meat and seafood from our local butchers and fishermen, veg straight out of the dirt on Jim’s Farm, happy free-range eggs from the local ‘girls’ as well as all the cheese & vino we can from our own little food bowl here in Gippsland”.

Who could ask for more? We round off an excellent day travelling to Willung South where we visit delightful Toms Cap, a small boutique vineyard situated in Central Gippsland and surrounded by the forests of the Strzelecki Ranges. All their wines are made from their own fruit, bottled, cellared and marketed by Toms Cap. We return to the hotel where we have time to freshen up before dinner.

OVERNIGHT:  Prom Country Lodge, FOSTER

COAST TO VENUS BAY

We make our way east along the coast today to an area known as the Bunurong Coast host to the Bunurong Marine National Park which has been proclaimed as a no-take area extending off shore for approximately 5.5kms to sea. These coastal waters share the cool waters of Victoria’s central and western coasts but, unlike those shores, are relatively protected from the oceanic south-westerly swell by the position of distant King Island. There are beach access sites so if we feel like getting the sand between our toes we may stop to take a stroll. In Wonthaggi we’ll visit the State Coal Mine for a guided tour of the complex. We make our way to Venus Bay where we have arranged lunch at The Cavity restaurant café. The laid back lifestyle that this area offers is exactly what a relaxed holiday is all about. We are in no rush so savour the food and the atmosphere!

OVERNIGHT:  Prom Country Lodge, FOSTER

FOSTER TO HOME

Today we can stock up on some country goodies to take home with us! Our first stop is Meeniyan, a popular ‘foodie’ destination and we have time to browse the speciality stores and bakeries. The Meeniyan Art Gallery, an innovative gallery is well worth a look. The shop has a focus on Gippsland's best handcrafted and original items. Getting hungry? Time for lunch then! We make our way to Korumburra and Burra Brewing Co. We can taste their range of excellent brews and tuck into woodfired pizzas and perhaps learn about the brewing process – if the brewer’s not practicing his craft! Our last visit for the day is Glen Forbes and Bassine Speciality Cheeses a small cheese making concern.

We’ll have a chat with the producers along with a sampling of their produce. From here we make our way home and as usual, we will be delivered to our door to complete a wonderful holiday, heralding a grand start to 2020!!

MULTIPLE NIGHT STAYS

4 nights in Colac

Itinerary

HOME TO COLAC

We have an early start this morning as we make our way to Sorrento to board the Searoad Ferry across “the Heads” to Queenscliff on the Bellarine Peninsula. Established in 1838 as a pilot station to guide ships through the Rip (the narrow entrance to Port Phillip Bay), Queenscliff is imbued with olde worlde character, historic hotels and homes, stores, rugged beaches and even a bona fide fort, built to defend Port Phillip Bay from foreign navies, privateers and other undesirables. Our first stop is the Queenscliff Maritime Museum featuring the last Queenscliff life boat and covers the maritime history of Queenscliff, Southern Port Phillip and the Bass Strait interface.  After lunch, we’re off to the Marine and Freshwater Discovery Centre for a fascinating insight into Victoria’s marine and freshwater environments by one of the Centre’s Education Officers. We continue on to our destination Colac, where we can unpack just the once, as this is our home for the next 4 nights.

OVERNIGHT: Colac Central Hotel Motel, COLAC

THE 12 APOSTLES GOURMET TRAIL

Today is a day for tempting the tastebuds as we follow the 12 Apostles Gourmet Trail! We make our way to Cooriemungle to visit Apostle Whey Cheese, a genuine ‘paddock to plate’ operation. We’ll have an interesting chat and a chance to taste their wares! It’s then a short trip to our next stop: GORGE Chocolates, producers of handmade chocolates using a special type of Belgian chocolate. At Princeton we pick up the Great Ocean Road where it rejoins the coast and runs the full length of the Port Campbell National Park.  We pass the Twelve Apostles- huge pillars looming out of the surf, carved over time by the fury of the ocean; stopping for a look at Loch Ard Gorge, where in 1878 the iron hulled clipper Loch Ard was driven out onto rocks offshore.  Of the 50 or so on board only two were to survive, being swept into the narrow gorge now named after their ill-fated vessel. After lunch in Port Campbell we’re off to Timboon to the Timboon Fine Ice-cream, a lovely way to finish! We return to the hotel where we have time to freshen up, for this evening we are off to the Colac RSL Club for a New Year’s dinner!

OVERNIGHT: Colac Central Hotel Motel, COLAC

RED ROCK VOLCANIC RESERVE

Happy New Year! Colac, with a population of over 10,000 people is situated on the southern shores of Lake Colac and is the main centre of a prosperous closely settled agricultural district. As well as the town and the lake we make a stop at the Botanic Gardens dating back to the nineteenth century. Listed on the Australian Heritage register. The gardens contain a number of significant specimens. After our tour of the town and a morning tea break we depart Colac on our sight-seeing tour of the Red Rock Volcanic Reserve. We leave the highway west of Colac and travel to Alvie where we will stop for our picnic lunch. From here we’ll take the short drive to the Red Rock Lookouts. Volcanic cones, craters and crater lakes are the main features of Red Rock. From the lookouts there is a panorama across what is perhaps the 3rd largest volcanic plain in the world.

OVERNIGHT: Colac Central Hotel Motel, COLAC

OUT AND ABOUT IN OTWAY

We make our way back to the coast to Glenaire, where we again connect with the Great Ocean Road through the Otway National Park to Cape Otway. Steeped in history and surrounded by beauty, the Cape Otway Lighthouse is an unforgettable experience. In 1848 the lighthouse became the beacon of hope on a dangerous coastline and is one of the oldest lighthouses in Australia. We will enjoy a morning tea break here before heading back along the Great Ocean Road, through Apollo Bay and back inland to Forrest, where we stop at the Forrest Brewing Company, a small 600 litre brew house and brew-pub located in the old general store in Forrest. All their beer is brewed on site, hand bottled, hand labelled and bottle conditioned. We’ll have the opportunity here to view the brewing process and also enjoy a light lunch in their charming restaurant! Our last stop before heading back to Colac is to Tarndwarncoort Homestead, one of Australia’s oldest family farms and is also the birthplace of Australia’s first breed of sheep – Polwarth.  It will be an interesting visit with afternoon tea and a tour of the gardens and homestead.

OVERNIGHT: Colac Central Hotel Motel, COLAC

HEADING HOME

This morning we head for Winchelsea where we pay a visit to Hastings Ostrich Farm. Ostrich’s are majestic, flightless birds, weighing up to 180kg and laying eggs over 1.5kg. Our tour guide will answer any questions we may have about these fascinating birds. Winchelsea was first settled in 1837 and was named after one of the Cinque Ports in England. There are many historic buildings and an old bridge in the town. After lunch in Winchelsea, we’ll visit Barwon Park Mansion, for a tour of this beautiful home built in 1869 and later bequeathed to the National Trust. It is noted for the fine cast iron balcony verandah, its bluestone construction and the ornate furnishings. We then head for home, where our chauffeurs will be waiting to take us to our very door, a lovely end to our exciting tour!

MULTIPLE NIGHT STAYS

4 Nights in Torquay

Itinerary

HOME TO TORQUAY

With personal pickup from home, our journey this morning takes us to nearby Werribee Park Mansion, long regarded as Victoria's finest rural colonial homestead. On arrival we take a walk through the State Rose Garden featuring thousands of plants in the shape of a giant Tudor rose. We take a self-guided tour of this very majestic house, considered an Australian version of the English country house and garden and a symbol of Australia's pastoral elite in the colonial era. Next door to the Mansion is the Werribee Open Range Zoo. We enjoy lunch in the café before boarding our special safari coach to take a drive through the Zoo. We will be completely immersed in the sights, smells and sounds of the savannah as we travel across the Zoo’s open plains. The magnificent wildlife, including rhinos, giraffes, zebras and antelopes will seem almost touchable. From here we continue on to Torquay, home for the next 4 nights.

OVERNIGHT:  Peppers the Sands Resort, TORQUAY

GREAT OCEAN ROAD

Torquay is the undisputed surfing capital of Australia and home to two iconic surfing brands, Rip Curl and Quicksilver. Our sightseeing will include visiting Bells Beach which hosts the Rip Curl Pro Surfing Classic- held annually in April, attracting competitors from all over the world. We then head offto explore one of Australia’s most spectacular coastal drives. Built to honour the servicemen and women of World War One, the Great Ocean Road extends more than 300 kilometers along some of the best coastal scenery this country has to offer. We travel through the coastal town of Anglesea to Lorne, which was the first place to be declared an area of Special Significance and Natural Beauty by the Victorian Government. The approach to Lorne is spectacular. This popular Victorian seaside village, located on Loutitt Bay overlooks the Otway Hills. From Lorne we continue through Kennett River where we can spot wild Koalas, Kookaburras, Parrots and Lorikeets in the eucalyptus trees. After lunch in Apollo Bay we do an ‘about turn’ and keeping our seats, gently meander back along the Great Ocean Road, retracing our steps for a totally different perspective of the coast to that on the way down. We travel to Bellbrae for a special treat - the Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie to taste their wares! Yum! We then drive up to the Princes Highway and make our way back to Torquay.

OVERNIGHT:  Peppers the Sands Resort, TORQUAY

CHRISTMAS DAY

Merry Christmas! ! This morning we have some time to relax or attend local church services before taking a scenic drive along the coast. We drive to Barwon Heads via Thirteenth Beach, one of the many popular ocean beaches in the area. The bridge over the Barwon River and the various buildings on the water’s edge were part of the set for the ABC’s popular Sea Change program. Making our way back to our resort, we’ll have time to freshen up for before our delicious Christmas lunch with all the trimmings! The rest of the day is at leisure and this evening, for those of us still a little peckish, a light supper will be available.

OVERNIGHT:  Peppers the Sands Resort, TORQUAY

WINCHELSEA

This morning we head for Winchelsea which was first settled in 1837 and was named after one of the Cinque Ports in England. There are many historic buildings and an old bridge in town. We pay a visit to Hastings Ostrich Farm. Ostriches are majestic, flightless birds, weighing up to 180kg. It is noted for the fine cast iron balcony verandah, its bluestone construction and the ornate furnishings.

OVERNIGHT:  Peppers the Sands Resort, TORQUAY

TORQUAY TO HOME

This morning we are introduced to a local expert who will hop on board our coach for a more extensive tour of Geelong city, concluding at the city’s waterfront. Here, we’re going to be transported back in time to when a trip to the seaside was a big event! The Carousel on the waterfront was built in 1892 and operated on the Mordialloc pier until the 1950’s when it fell into disrepair. Now fully restored – each horse took over 300 hours to bring back to its former glory – the Carousel sits under a special glass canopy, once more bringing delight to a new generation. Lunch today is right on the water at the Geelong Boat House – just perfect. This afternoon we’re off to do a little picking and poking for a bargain at the Amazing Mill Markets. There are more than 60 stalls here offering a selection of vintage clothes, vintage furniture, collectables, antiques, memorabilia, home decor, fine china, art, glass, coins, jewellery, books and records, to name a few! From here we make our way back to Melbourne to complete a truly fabulous short break away!

SYDNEY

After breakfast we head off on our sightseeing tour of the Harbour City! Firstly, we drive to Mrs. Macquarie’s Chair on the harbour foreshore.  The chair was carved out of the sandstone by convicts for Governor Lachlan Macquarie’s wife in order for her to watch the activity on the harbour and await the arrival of ships from England. The point provides us with wonderful views of the Sydney Opera House, the Harbour Bridge and Fort Denison – don’t forget to bring your camera as this is a great group photo opportunity! We then make our way to the Sydney Opera House where we meet our local guide for a tour with a difference. 60 years ago Jorn Utzon designed what is now considered one of the greatest buildings of all time. It is also the youngest building ever to be world heritage listed We’ll take a tour of this stunning building, then have some free time to buy lunch and take in the sights before returning to the hotel. We have a special outing this evening, a delightful dinner at the revolving 360 Bar & Dining at Sydney Tower. Enjoy sweeping views of this dynamic city as we gently revolve a full 360 degrees! We have arranged a transfer back to the hotel – or if you wish, feel free to “kick on” to taste Sydney’s nightlife.

Lunch at own arrangements and expense

OVERNIGHT:  Rydges World Square, SYDNEY

SYDNEY AND THE ROYAL EDINBURGH MILITARY TATTOO

We have the chance to sleep in this morning after our late night. We board Captain Cook Cruises for the Harbour Story cruise– and as the name suggests, we’ll hear commentary of the stories of Sydney and her harbour with unlimited self-service tea and coffee. After our cruise we have the afternoon free to purchase lunch and perhaps some shopping, personal sightseeing or some rest. We enjoy an early dinner, then transfer to ANZ Stadium, Sydney Olympic Park for an unforgettable night out! Coming direct from its annual season entertaining more than 220,000 people on the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle, Scotland, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo continues to boast sell-out performances. Be caught up and inspired by this emotional spectacle, set against the backdrop of a full-size replica of Edinburgh Castle. We’ll be lavishly entertained by traditional Scottish and international favourites including pipers, fiddlers, highland dancers and precision drill teams. Itinerary

MELBOURNE TO WAGGA WAGGA

Welcome to our holiday which will feature the fabulous Hunter Valley Christmas Lights. With personal pick-up from home, we travel over the Great Divide for a lunch stop at Wangaratta. We continue past Albury then make our way up to Wagga Wagga for our first night.

OVERNIGHT: International Hotel, WAGGA WAGGA

WAGGA WAGGA TO MAITLAND

Following a cooked breakfast, we re-join the Hume Highway and continue north, stopping for lunch in Peakhurst. We’ll be returning to Sydney later in our tour, so this afternoon, we travel around the outskirts of the city passing the Central Coast on our way to Maitland. On arrival, we check into our accommodation. We’re here for three nights, so unpack and settle in.

OVERNIGHT: Old Maitland Inn, MAITLAND

THE HUNTER VALLEY

We take a leisurely drive into the Hunter Valley where we visit Hunter Valley Gardens - over 60 acres of spectacular international display gardens, nestled at the foothills of the Brokenback Ranges. We’ll take a tractor train ride through the gardens to orientate ourselves. Step back in time with all our favourite fairytale characters in the Storybook Garden. Stop and smell the roses in the Rose Garden. Explore the Indian Mosaic Garden, the Oriental Garden, the Italian Grotto and marvel at the use of water features in the Sunken Garden and the Lakes Walk. We’ll have plenty of time to wander and our lunch will be served in the Garden Terrace Restaurant. Mid-afternoon we head to the Hunter Valley Village Shops to stop and browse - some may choose to visit Hunter Valley Cookies, the Hunter Valley Chocolate Company or the British Lolly Shop. We then visit the Hunter Valley Cheese Company to sample some of their delicious cheeses and of course, no visit to the Hunter Valley would be complete without a wine tasting, so we also visit McGuigans Wines to taste their offerings. We enjoy dinner at Harrigans Irish Pub before making our way back to the gardens for the magical Christmas Lights Spectacular. With over 1.5 million Christmas lights on show, there are enough lights to cover a football oval and 19kms of string lighting! The lights spectacular is bound to capture the spirit of Christmas and create lasting memories for all.

OVERNIGHT: Old Maitland Inn, MAITLAND

THE BARRINGTON REGION

We “head for the hills” today making our way through Paterson up to the lovely village of Dungog then on through Stratford to Gloucester.  This drive takes us through one of the loveliest and most magnificent alpine regions in Australia. Gloucester is reminiscent of Gloucestershire in England and the adjoining towns all remind one of English Counties; for example Stratford on Avon (the Avon River runs through Stratford), Stroud and Craven to name a few. At Hillview Herb Farm we are given a brief talk on growing herbs and how to use them, followed by lunch. We then have a little time to wander through the garden and look at products to perhaps purchase. We then meander back to Maitland.

OVERNIGHT: Old Maitland Inn, MAITLAND

MAITLAND TO SYDNEY

We farewell our hosts this morning, but before leaving, we have a look at Maitland, a heritage centre of NSW, dating back nearly 200 years and the third largest provincial city in NSW. Situated on the banks of the Hunter River in the heart of the picturesque Hunter Valley, the City of Maitland is older than Melbourne and only 16 years younger than Sydney! Many of Maitland’s restored and heritage protected buildings date as far back as the 1820’s and serve as monuments to the pioneering days. After our tour, we make our way to the charming village of Morpeth which is under a heritage order. It was once an important river port in the 19th century. We enjoy morning tea at Campbells Store and can taste some locally produced Fudge, Ginger Beer and Honey. A local expert will then take us on a tour of this historic town. Sydney is our destination today and on arrival we check into our hotel with time to freshen up for our evening out. Tonight we join the Magistic Dinner Cruise - the views are stunning as we dine and dance whilst cruising Sydney’s beautiful harbour.

Lunch at own arrangements and expense

OVERNIGHT: Parkroyal Darling Harbour, SYDNEY

SYDNEY TO BATEMANS BAY

Today we travel south to join the Coastal Road towards Wollongong and the most popular coastal tourist drive is along the 665 metre 'Sea Cliff' Bridge. The bridge itself has become a major attraction because it has been built at the exact point at which the Illawarra Escarpment plunges into the South Pacific Ocean, delivering an amazing driving experience. We continue through Wollongong to Kiama where we take our lunch break. We’ll visit the famous Blowhole – some of us may like to walk off our lunch while others can watch the water spout. Our next stop isn’t far – the charming village of Berry, where we’ll have some time to wander down the main street which has some interesting shops and galleries. The last leg of today’s journey sees us arriving in Batemans Bay later this afternoon.

Lunch at own arrangements and expense

OVERNIGHT: Best Western Sunseeker Motor Inn, BATEMANS BAY

BATEMANS BAY TO EDEN

A local expert joins us today to show us the sights and tell us about the history of Batemans Bay. We then travel the short distance to the privately owned Mogo Zoo. Here there are lions, tigers, jaguars, a variety of monkeys, red pandas, small clawed otters to mention just some of the animals we will meet today. We have plenty of time to explore the zoo before lunch. This afternoon we drive to our destination, Eden, for our final night on tour.

OVERNIGHT: Coachman's Rest Motor Inn, EDEN

HOMEWARD BOUND

Unfortunately, our tour is coming to an end as we make our way into Victoria. We stop for our morning break and of course, a hot lunch before arriving back in Melbourne. As usual, we will be dropped at our doorsteps to complete a wonderful holiday full of fantastic memories!
