Itinerary

MELBOURNE TO WANGARATTA

Welcome aboard our Christmas in North East Victoria tour! Our chauffeur will collect us from home and take us to where we will meet our coach and friendly O’Shannessy’s crew who’ll be looking after us during our tour. Whilst acquainting ourselves with our fellow travellers we experience the view from the panoramic windows as we cruise in comfort via the Hume Highway to Seymour where we’ll take a little time to view the Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Walk. The centerpiece of this walk is the wall, made up of panels of DigiGlass with the name of every Serviceman and Woman who served, in their various capacities in that conflict. Arriving into Benalla for lunch, we’ll drive around the city taking in some of the Street Art– artists from around the world were brought together to paint murals on bare walls, some over three stories high. From here we continue to Wangaratta, home for the next 4 nights.

OVERNIGHT: Quality Hotel Wangaratta Gateway, WANGARATTA

YARRAWONGA & RUTHERGLEN

This morning we travel through to the twin cities of Mulwala and Yarrawonga, to the shores of Lake Mulwala where we join the MV Paradise Queen for a morning tea cruise on the lake. Upon disembarkation we’re off for a lunch and tour of Byramine Homestead. Built as a veritable fortress in an octagonal shape to provide a clear view of all angles in the case of attack by Bushrangers. Often the family had to hide in the cellar! After our lunch and tour we head to Corowa to visit the Corowa Whiskey and Chocolate Factory.  Once the old Corowa Flour Mill, the building has been repurposed and tastefully refurbished as a whiskey and chocolate factory.  We’ll have afternoon tea in their rustic café before taking a tour, giving us a chance to make our own “freckle” to take with us!   After a lovely day, we head back to our motel to relax before dinner.

OVERNIGHT: Quality Hotel Wangaratta Gateway, WANGARATTA

BEECHWORTH

Today’s touring takes us to Beechworth.  On arrival we will be joined on the coach by a local expert who will show us around the town, one of Victoria’s best preserved gold rush towns. The discovery of gold in the 1850’s brought with it a flurry of activity and growth. The magnificent buildings, 32 of which are listed by the National Trust and the beautiful gardens are a legacy of the gold rush days.  We then have some free time to wander around the Beechworth Historic and Cultural Precinct – namely The Telegraph Station, Town Hall, and Powder Magazine which are all part of the collection of nationally significant buildings. We’ll enjoy lunch today at a local icon, the famous Beechworth Bakery– yum! This afternoon we visit the Out Of Town Nursery and Humming Garden. Nestled in the foothills of the Chiltern-Mt Pilot National Park in North East Victoria, this 4 acre garden is comprised of many rooms each with its own character and style, crammed with an extensive collection of native and exotic plants. Humming with wildlife, many native birds find sanctuary in the leafy borders. Several species of Honeyeaters, King Parrots, Red Browed Finches, White Winged Choughs and Satin Bowerbirds are just a few of the permanent residents. The gardens are designed to entertain and amuse visitors with quirky garden art and bold colour combinations as well as provide the more serious gardener with an understanding of plant species and the use of water maximizing techniques.

OVERNIGHT: Quality Hotel Wangaratta Gateway, WANGARATTA

CHRISTMAS DAY

MERRY CHRISTMAS!! Silos are drawing crowds to small country towns in Victoria, so this morning we’re off to do a little silo spotting of our own.  Our first stop today is in Tungamah to see brolgas and a kookaburra. In Devenish, see Cam Scale’s artwork representing the changing role of women in the military – a First World War nurse and a modern-day combat medic. At the Goorambat Silo we see a Barking Owl, which is critically endangered. Each silo has a different artist and a different story! We then head back to Wangaratta to ready ourselves for our Christmas Lunch with all the trimmings!  Later this afternoon, we can relax by the pool and tonight, a light supper will be offered for those who are feeling peckish.

OVERNIGHT: Quality Hotel Wangaratta Gateway, WANGARATTA

WANGARATTA TO MELBOURNE

This morning we farewell our hosts and enjoy a relaxing drive south through the beautiful King Valley, now a popular food and wine destination. From Whitfield we take in amazing views as we cross the Great Dividing Range to Mansfield for our last lunch together.  We have an afternoon break at Yea and travel via the Yarra Valley to Melbourne. As always our chauffeurs will take us safely home after a wonderful Christmas Holiday!

Itinerary

MELBOURNE TO GRAFTON

Welcome to our 7 day tour to Grafton in northern NSW. This morning we make our way to Melbourne Airport to board our flight to Coolangatta. We’ll be met by our O’Shannessy’s Touring Coach and crew on arrival and after loading up we drive south, stopping for lunch in Cabarita Beach. We then continue through rolling green hills with banana plantations and pockets of sugar cane, passing Kyogle and Casino to our destination of Grafton, a city of tree lined streets and graceful old buildings overlooking the Clarence River.  As early as 1866 Grafton council resolved to consider by-laws for the planting and preserving of trees and shrubs in the streets and recreation grounds. There are now some 7,000 trees in Grafton and many beautiful parks.  The most famous of the trees is of course the Jacaranda - the Jacarandas flower at this time each year providing a spectacular setting.

OVERNIGHT: Quality Inn, GRAFTON

LOCAL SIGHTSEEING

After breakfast a local expert will board the coach for a tour of Grafton. We visit Schaeffer House, now home to the Clarence River Historical Society, the oldest historical society in the country. We then head north to Junction Hill to visit Lanbruk’s Gunyah – the property belonging to Dorothy and Don Enders. Here we’ll be taken on a tour through the olive grove; see the animals (alpacas and Dorper sheep to name a couple) in the paddocks before a delicious lunch. We have the opportunity to browse through the gift shop to admire local handicrafts and of course, pick up a supply of the organic olive oils produced here. There is even a museum housing the fully restored and still running, 1926 Chevy Utility.

OVERNIGHT: Quality Inn, GRAFTON

YAMBA & TULLYMORGAN

This morning we take in the sights of Yamba, a quiet seaside town on the southern side of the Clarence River estuary. We will see the Yamba Lighthouse, located on South Head, standing 41m above the sea. It offers fine views of the coastline and is a popular whale-watching site in the winter months. Nearby is a replica of the original 1879 lighthouse erected by volunteers for use as a community radio station. We also visit Angourie, a popular surfing spot and Maclean, known as “the Scottish Town” and noted for its historical buildings. There’s also time to browse in the Scottish Corner and perhaps find our clan and tartan! From here we travel across to Tullymorgan to visit the Glen Ian Ostrich and Emu Farm for lunch. We are also treated to an insight of these giant birds, in addition to the incubation process and chicks. The farm is also home to alpacas and goats not to mention numerous other bird varieties. We have another interesting tour this afternoon at the Reeves Family Sugar Farm. We are here at harvesting time so our host will take us through to the harvesting site, which we may see the big harvesting machines in action. Visiting here will give us an insight into the local industry and lifestyle of a cane farmer.

OVERNIGHT: Quality Inn, GRAFTON

LOCAL SIGHTSEEING & WOOLGOOLGA

Today our sightseeing takes us back to the coast, stopping for a morning tea break from the coach in Woolgoolga. From here we travel onto Coffs Harbour to visit the Clog Barn. Here we’ll discover a treasure of souvenirs, special gifts, hand painted tiles and enjoy a fascinating clog making demonstration. We have time to wander town and purchase some lunch. On our way out of town we stop in to visit the Carobana Chocolate Factory. We’ll see where honeycomb, brittles and fudges are made and enjoy the samples in the shop. Leaving the coast we drive up to Bruxner Park for some excellent views overlooking the city and coast. We return to Grafton through the country town of Nana Glen and onto Glenreagh, nestled between the hills on the Orara Riverbank where we’ll stretch our legs.

Lunch at own cost and arrangements today

OVERNIGHT: Quality Inn, GRAFTON

WATERFALL WAY

Today we head south through Nymboida to Ebor for our morning stop.  The viewing platforms at Ebor Falls in the Guy Fawkes National Park provide us with dramatic views of the falls and the rugged country to the north. Following the Waterfall Way, we drive to the Dorrigo Plateau and the Dorrigo National Park to see magnificent rainforest country and stunning views. The Skywalk especially will provide some spectacular views.  After lunch in the Canopy Café, we drive down towards the coast with a brief stop in the historic township of Bellingen. Nestled on the banks of the beautiful Bellinger River, Bellingen is one of the most beautiful and historic towns on the North Coast. Step back in time in Bellingen with its traditional-style main street, the highlight of which is the restored Hammond and Wheatley Emporium building, which is as grand as its name suggests.  As we reach the coast we drive up through Coffs Harbour to the Forest Sky Pier at Sealy Lookout, located on an escarpment 310 metres above Coffs Harbour, projecting 21.6 metres beyond the original lookout and offers an expansive vista encompassing Coffs Harbour city and beyond. On a clear day you can see 100km to the south!

OVERNIGHT: Quality Inn, GRAFTON

BALLINA

This morning we take in the sights of Ballina - with over 32 kms of pristine sandy beaches, crystal clear waterways, endless streams, lakes and estuaries and the far reaches of the Richmond River, the Ballina Coast & Hinterland is truly a natural wonder.  Look out for the Big Prawn - one of Australia’s iconic “big things”!!  We’ll visit the Ballina Naval and Maritime Museum which features extensive historical displays of the Port of Ballina and is home to the Las Balsas Raft that sailed on an epic voyage from Ecuador to Ballina in 1973. We now head across to Alstonville to visit Summerland House Farm for lunch. Established in 1972, Summerland House Farm is an exciting House with No Steps business enterprise which has transformed a working macadamia and avocado farm into a large scale agritourism destination that provides training and employment opportunities to people with a disability.

OVERNIGHT: Quality Inn, GRAFTON

GRAFTON TO MELBOURNE

This morning we farewell our hosts and join the Pacific Highway for our morning’s journey back over the border. We stop for lunch before retracing our steps back to the Coolangatta Airport, to board our flight to Melbourne having had a memorable 7 day tour to the Grafton area and the Jacarandas in Bloom.

Itinerary

MELBOURNE TO WAGGA WAGGA

Welcome to our 6 day tour to Cowra featuring the annual Boorowa Irish Woolfest! After our pickups, we depart Melbourne and head to a place near Cobram called Koonoomoo – home to the Big Strawberry. Anything you can think of that has strawberries in it, they make it here. Jams, ice creams, liqueur, milk shakes – you name it! We enjoy lunch here before continuing on to Wagga Wagga.

OVERNIGHT: International Hotel Wagga Wagga,  WAGGA WAGGA

WAGGA WAGGA TO COWRA

We continue on our way, travelling via Coolamon and Mirrool to West Wyalong where we stop for lunch. This afternoon we travel across to Cowra - our base for the next 3 nights.

OVERNIGHT: Cowra Services Club Motel, COWRA

COWRA

After breakfast we visit the Cowra Visitors Centre. It is also where we collect our local guide for a tour of the town made famous by the POW Camp located here during WWII. We start by viewing the award winning hologram in the P.O.W. Theatre, a nine minute presentation that tells the story of the Cowra Breakout in 1944. On our town tour we will visit the Australian World Peace Bell, the Cowra Italy Friendship Monument and the Australian & Japanese War Cemeteries, containing the graves of the Japanese involved in the POW Breakout during World War II. This is the only Japanese War Cemetery in Australia. Our morning tea is served right next door to the Visitors Centre, at the Rose Garden Coffee House. Next is a visit to the Cowra Japanese Gardens and Cultural Centre. Meandering paths and wooden bridges allow us to explore and view the gardens at ease. It’s a beautiful time to visit as the cherry trees in the gardens should be in full flower!  We have plenty of time here to wander or relax and enjoy the gardens. This afternoon we head to Canowindra, visiting Rosnay Farm to tour and taste some of their organic wines. We also have time to enjoy a wander through the town before returning to Cowra.

BOOROWA IRISH WOOLFEST - “RUNNING OF THE SHEEP”

Today we drive south to Boorowa for the annual Irish Woolfest. Everyone’s heard of the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain, but much closer to home in Boorowa we can enjoy the spectacle of the “Running of the Sheep”. These beautiful woolly Merino sheep are shepherded down the road by a Farmer on his four wheel motorbike and his trusty Kelpies who leap on and off the motorbikes and on and off the sheep's back. There is plenty to see and do at the Woolfest - the Blessing of the Sheep, Celtic Pipe Bands, Irish Dancers and craft, food and wool stalls to maybe purchase a souvenir from. Later this afternoon we’ll reboard the coach and head back to Cowra for dinner.

COWRA TO ALBURY

This morning we’re off to Young, a historic mining town known as the Cherry Capital of Australia! We’ll stop at the Allambie Cherry Orchard for a talk on the flourishing cherry industry plus a delicious slice of cherry pie for our morning tea. Originally named Lambing Flat, the town is steeped in early gold mining history. Gold was discovered here in 1860 and within months there were 20,000 prospectors on the fields! From here we travel through small rural towns of Wombat and Wallendbeen to Junee where we stop at the Monte Cristo Homestead and experience life from a bygone era. We will view the magnificent collection of fine antiques and renowned carriage collection. This remarkable homestead was built in 1884 and is recognized as the most haunted house in Australia, with 10 resident ghosts! We’ll have lunch here before continuing on through Wagga Wagga to Albury for our overnight stay.

OVERNIGHT: Best Western Hovell Tree, ALBURY

ALBURY TO HOME

Leaving Albury we make our way through Benalla and then south to Seymour where we’ll take a little time to view the Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Walk. The centre piece of this Walk is the wall, made up of panels of DigiGlass with the name of every Serviceman and Woman who served, in their various capacities in that conflict. Our lunch stop is at Kerrisdale and the Kerrisdale Mountain Railway & Museum. This is a unique railway built on a zig zag formation and the line climbs quite steeply as it wends its way through tall trees on a precipitous track cut into the mountain side. A panorama unfolds over the King Parrott Valley and further to the distant snow-capped peaks in winter of the Victorian Alps. We have time for a live demonstration at the Steam Museum and a country style lunch before continuing on home.
