SYDNEY

After breakfast we head off on our sightseeing tour of the Harbour City! Firstly, we drive to Mrs. Macquarie’s Chair on the harbour foreshore.  The chair was carved out of the sandstone by convicts for Governor Lachlan Macquarie’s wife in order for her to watch the activity on the harbour and await the arrival of ships from England. The point provides us with wonderful views of the Sydney Opera House, the Harbour Bridge and Fort Denison – don’t forget to bring your camera as this is a great group photo opportunity! We then make our way to the Sydney Opera House where we meet our local guide for a tour with a difference. 60 years ago Jorn Utzon designed what is now considered one of the greatest buildings of all time. It is also the youngest building ever to be world heritage listed We’ll take a tour of this stunning building, then have some free time to buy lunch and take in the sights before returning to the hotel. We have a special outing this evening, a delightful dinner at the revolving 360 Bar & Dining at Sydney Tower. Enjoy sweeping views of this dynamic city as we gently revolve a full 360 degrees! We have arranged a transfer back to the hotel – or if you wish, feel free to “kick on” to taste Sydney’s nightlife.

SYDNEY AND THE ROYAL EDINBURGH MILITARY TATTOO

We have the chance to sleep in this morning after our late night. After our cruise we have the afternoon free to purchase lunch and perhaps some shopping, personal sightseeing or some rest. We enjoy an early dinner, then transfer to ANZ Stadium, Sydney Olympic Park for an unforgettable night out! Coming direct from its annual season entertaining more than 220,000 people on the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle, Scotland, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo continues to boast sell-out performances. Be caught up and inspired by this emotional spectacle, set against the backdrop of a full-size replica of Edinburgh Castle. We’ll be lavishly entertained by traditional Scottish and international favourites including pipers, fiddlers, highland dancers and precision drill teams. Together with members of the Australian Defence Force this will be a ‘tour de force’ guaranteed to stir our souls and uplift our senses!

HOME TO WANGARATTA

Welcome to our 5 day tour of North East Victoria featuring the Bright Springtime Open Gardens. With personal pickup from home we are transferred to O’Shannessy’s luxury coach and travel to Mansfield on the eastern shores of Lake Eildon for our lunch stop. From here we make our way to Wangaratta, where we’ll base ourselves at the delightful Quality Hotel Wangaratta Gateway for the next 4 nights. Unpacking just once, we join our fellow travellers at the motel restaurant for our first meal together.

OVERNIGHT:  Quality Hotel Wangaratta Gateway, WANGARATTA

EXPLORING BRIGHT

We head into the High Country this morning to Bright, said to be located in the most beautiful alpine valley in the world - Ovens Valley. Surrounded by the towering Australian Alps, it has managed to retain its character and charm, thanks partly to its old-fashioned guest houses and historical buildings. We commence our Open Gardens visits  for a spectacular spring display. The area should be looking stunning during the springtime. Back in town, we have time to wander through the main street and purchase lunch. We then head back to Wangaratta for some free time before dinner at the hotel this evening.

Lunch at own expense and arrangement.

OVERNIGHT:  Quality Hotel Wangaratta Gateway, WANGARATTA

BEECHWORTH

Today’s touring takes us to Beechworth. On arrival we will be joined on the coach by a local expert who will show us around the town, one of Victoria’s best preserved gold rush towns. The discovery of gold in the 1850’s brought with it a flurry of activity and growth. The magnificent buildings, 32 of which are listed by the National Trust and the beautiful gardens are a legacy of the gold rush days. We have some free time to wander around the Beechworth Historic and Cultural Precinct – namely The Telegraph Station, Town Hall and Powder Magazine are all part of the collection of nationally significant buildings. Lunch today is up to you - perhaps indulge at the famous Beechworth Bakery. This afternoon we continue our gardens exploration with a visit to the Out Of Town Nursery and Humming Garden. Nestled in the foothills of the Chiltern - Mt Pilot National Park in North East Victoria, this 4 acre garden is comprised of many rooms each with its own character and style, crammed with an extensive collection of native and exotic plants. Designed to entertain and amuse visitors with quirky garden art and bold colour combinations as well as provide the more serious gardener with an understanding of plant species and the use of water maximising techniques.

Lunch at own expense and arrangement.

OVERNIGHT:  Quality Hotel Wangaratta Gateway, WANGARATTA

YARRAWONGA & COROWA

This morning we travel through to the twin cities of Mulwala and Yarrawonga, to the shores of Lake Mulwala where we join the  MV Paradise Queen for a morning tea cruise on the lake. Upon disembarkation we’re off for a lunch and tour of Byramine Homestead, built as a veritable fortress in an octagonal shape to provide a clear view of all angles in the case of attack by Bushrangers. Often the family had to hide in the cellar! We then head to Corowa to visit the Corowa Whiskey and Chocolate Factory.  Once the old Corowa Flour Mill, the building has been repurposed and tastefully refurbished as the whiskey and chocolate factory.  We’ll have afternoon tea in their rustic café before taking a tour, giving us a chance to make our own “freckle” to take with us!  After a lovely day, we head back to our motel to relax before dinner.

OVERNIGHT:  Quality Hotel Wangaratta Gateway, WANGARATTA

HOMEWARD BOUND

We have a leisurely start this morning before we farewell our hosts to begin our journey home.  Silos are drawing crowds to small country towns in Victoria, so we’re off to do a little silo spotting of our own.  Our first stop today is in Tungamah to see brolgas and a kookaburra. In Devenish, we see Cam Scale’s artwork representing the changing role of women in the military – a First World War nurse and a modern-day combat medic. At the Goorambat Silo we see a Barking Owl, which is critically endangered. Each silo has a different artist and a different story! We’ll also make a stop here at the Uniting Church to view the stunning depiction of "Sophia" the female aspect of the Holy Spirit. After lunch in Benalla we’ll take a drive to see some of the Street Art. Artists from around the world were brought together to paint murals on bare walls, some over three stories high. We then head home with some fantastic memories of our Springtime Tour in the High Country.

Itinerary

MELBOURNE - MT GAMBIER

With pick up from home this morning, we transfer to O’Shannessy’s Coach and travel via the Westgate Bridge to Geelong for our morning tea break from the coach. From Geelong we drive to Warrnambool, a beautiful seaside city on the shores of Lady Bay. More than 100 ships and boats were wrecked within 80 kilometres from Warrnambool, hence the current name for the area - The Shipwreck Coast. Following a late lunch, we continue our journey west to Heywood, Dartmoor and across the border to Mt. Gambier. We take a short tour of this South Australian town, of particular interest are the craters of extinct volcanoes, including the famous “Blue Lakes”, the source of Mount Gambier’s water supply.  The volume of this fresh water lake neither diminishes nor gains and its water source is still unknown.  We also visit the beautifully landscaped Umpherston Cave. We then head to our accommodation and have time to freshen up before dinner.

OVERNIGHT: Quality Inn Presidential, MOUNT GAMBIER

SPIRIT OF THE COORONG CRUISE - FLEURIEU PENINSULA

Following a hearty breakfast this morning we travel along the Coorong, glimpsing the Younghusband Peninsula enroute. At Meningie we board the “Spirit of the Coorong” for an informative and relaxing luncheon cruise. Our cruise takes us across the Coorong National Park to Goolwa on the Fleurieu Peninsula.  Our coach will be waiting for us in Goolwa for the drive through Port Elliot to lovely Victor Harbor and the McCracken Country Club for our overnight accommodation. We’ll be back in Victor Harbor later in our tour for the opportunity to look around.

OVERNIGHT:  McCracken Country Club, VICTOR HARBOR

KANGAROO ISLAND ENTERPRISES

This morning, we take the scenic drive to Cape Jervis where we board the Sea Link ferry across Backstairs Passage to Penneshaw. Back on the coach we begin our days sightseeing. Our first visit is also a fascinating one. We arrive at the Raptor Domain for their free flight birds of prey demonstration. Raptor Domain will also be our lunch venue. After lunch we will be introduced to some unique Kangaroo Island ventures - the first one is Clifford’s Honey Farm for a honey ice cream and to learn about the unique Ligurian Bee. Very close by is Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Oil Distillery where we take a very interesting tour of the plant and equipment involved in producing eucalyptus oil and product. We then head to Kingscote, the island’s main town, where we check into our next three nights’ accommodation.

OVERNIGHT:    1834 Aurora Ozone Hotel, KINGSCOTE

KANGAROO ISLAND - NATURAL WONDERS OF THE SOUTH COAST

Today is a naturalist’s treat!  We spend our day along the South Coast beginning with a visit to the world famous Seal Bay for a chance to walk along the beach amongst the colony of Australian Sea Lions who live here all year round. It is an unforgettable experience to be guided by a National Parks Ranger, along the beach, within metres of the bulls, cows and seal pups as they rest on the beach. We then drive to Rocky River where we have plenty of time to spend in the Visitors Centre before our picnic lunch. This afternoon we continue our touring in the Flinders Chase National Park. Our sightseeing includes the Remarkable Rocks, Cape du Couedic and Admirals Arch where, via a spectacular board walk, we can see close up a colony of New Zealand Fur Seals who live in the sea and the rocks just below us. After a fascinating day, we return to the hotel via a different route and have time to freshen up for dinner.

OVERNIGHT:    1834 Aurora Ozone Hotel, KINGSCOTE

MORE KANGAROO ISLAND

This morning we have some free time to explore the town and perhaps purchase a souvenir of our holiday, before we make our way to beautiful Emu Bay.  At the Lavender Farm, we enjoy an informative talk and lunch.  This afternoon we call in to Bay of Shoals Wines overlooking the Bay of Shoals and Reeves Point, site of the first settlement in South Australia.  We enjoy some local wine tasting here before making our way back to Kingscote.

OVERNIGHT:    1834 Aurora Ozone Hotel, KINGSCOTE

VICTOR HARBOR

This morning we say farewell to Kangaroo Island and board the ferry at Penneshaw for our return journey to the mainland. Back on board the coach, we retrace our steps back to Victor Harbor. After lunch, we have some free time to explore “Victor”, as the locals know it. Perhaps take the opportunity to visit the SA Whale Centre (own expense). Victor Harbor was originally a whaling centre with three whaling stations in the mid - 1900s. An estimated 400 Southern Right Whales arrived into Encounter Bay each season. Unfortunately these magnificent mammals were destroyed back then but they have returned to the bay in increasing numbers. Later this afternoon, we check into our accommodation with time to settle in before dinner.

OVERNIGHT:  McCracken Country Club, VICTOR HARBOR

VICTOR HARBOR - GRAMPIANS

We have the chance for a sleep in this morning before beginning our journey back to Victoria. We travel to the “Heritage Town” of Strathalbyn. The railway reached Strathalbyn in 1884 and copper was smeltered in the district until 1914. Today the quaint town is popular for its architecture and pleasant atmosphere. At Tailem Bend we join the Dukes Highway through Tintinara to Keith where we enjoy our lunch. This afternoon, we make our way through Horsham to Stawell for our final night on tour.

OVERNIGHT:    Magdala Motor Lodge, STAWELL

GRAMPIANS - MELBOURNE

We have another great day planned with a scenic drive through the Grampians National Park before arriving in Ararat for our last lunch together. This afternoon, we rejoin the highway and travel via Ballarat to Melbourne. We return home with fond memories of a varied and interesting tour. As always, our chauffeurs will be there to greet us and return us safely to our doorstep.

Later we visit the Native Wildlife Shelter where some of South Australia’s most interesting native animals are cared for. Then of course, there is the great Aussie Barbecue – cooked and served in a bush setting on the banks of the mighty Murray River. An optional Nocturnal tour (additional cost) in a comfortable purpose built cart is available after dinner where you may see kangaroos, wombats, foxes, bats and owls.

OVERNIGHT:  Murray Princess

MURRAY PRINCESS - CAPTAIN'S FAREWELL DINNER

After an optional early morning bush walk with the Captain, we cruise slowly downriver past magnificent cliffs scoured by the river over millions of years. We reach Ngaut Ngaut Aboriginal Reserve, one of Australia’s most significant archaeological sites, for a step back in time – tens of thousands of years – for a guided boardwalk tour to view ancient rock carvings and to learn about Aboriginal history in the area. We return to the vessel to cruise downriver to Younghusband. For those wanting more, you can also take a scenic tender boat ride. Tonight the Captain and his officers host a spectacular Farewell Captain’s Buffet Dinner. Dress up and dance, if you wish…

OVERNIGHT:  Murray Princess

THE COORONG - MOUNT GAMBIER

We leave Younghusband and head back to Mannum. After breakfast we reluctantly say farewell as we arrive at the Mannum Wharf where we board our coach. Our travels today take us along the Coorong and into South Eastern South Australia. We visit Kingston S.E. and the holiday villages of Robe and Beachport. We take a look around Mount Gambier before retiring to our accommodation with time to relax before dinner.

OVERNIGHT: The Barn Accommodation and Steakhouse, MOUNT GAMBIER

MOUNT GAMBIER - WESTERN DISTRICT - HOME

This morning we travel the very picturesque area of Victoria’s Western District via Casterton and Coleraine to Hamilton. Hamilton is set among the rolling hills which produce some of the finest merino wool in the world. The town has therefore adopted the slogan “wool capital of the world”. Heading for home we pass through Mortlake and cross to the Princes Highway with lunch at Camperdown. Camperdown sits on the great volcanic plain of Victoria’s Western District and is surrounded by crater lakes and volcanic cones. As we cross the “great volcanic plain” we travel alongside miles of fascinating dry-stone walls which are a feature of the countryside and known as the stony rises. The walls were built in the 1860’s by highly skilled “wallers” from Ireland and Scotland. We also pass by many crater lakes, some more salty than the sea. We arrive at Geelong mid-afternoon and continue on to Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula to complete a wonderful time away. As always our chauffeurs will transfer us safely home with fond memories of the tour.

Itinerary

MELBOURNE TO SYDNEY

Welcome aboard our exciting “fly in - fly out” tour! We make our way to Melbourne Tullamarine Airport and board our flight to the Harbour City Sydney! On arrival we are met and transferred to our hotel.  We have three nights here, so unpack and settle in!

Refreshment in Flight - Lunch at own arrangements and expense

OVERNIGHT: Parkroyal Darling Harbour, SYDNEY

SYDNEY AND THE EDINBURGH MILITARY TATTOO

Sixty years ago Jorn Utzon designed what is now considered one of the greatest buildings of all time. It is also the youngest building ever to be world heritage listed. We’ll take a tour of this stunning building, then have some free time to buy lunch and take in the sights before returning to the hotel for an early dinner. This evening we make our way to ANZ Stadium, Sydney Olympic Park for an unforgettable night out!

SYDNEY

This morning we board Captain Cook Cruises for the Harbour Story Cruise – as the name suggests, we’ll hear commentary of the stories of Sydney and her harbour with unlimited self-service tea and coffee.  Lunch is at our own expense today and we have the afternoon free for a little shopping on Darling Harbour or perhaps some personal sightseeing. We have a special outing this evening, a delightful dinner at the Revolving 360 Bar and Dining at Sydney Tower. Enjoy sweeping views of this dynamic city as we gently revolve a full 360 degrees! We have arranged a transfer back to the hotel – or if you wish, feel free to “kick on” to taste Sydney’s nightlife.
